Canned Hunting Exposed: Savage Cruel Bloodthirsty

Canned Hunting Exposed: Savage Cruel Bloodthirsty

“We need, in a special way, to work twice as hard to help people understand that the animals are fellow creatures, that we must protect them and love them as we love ourselves.”
César Chávez

Zebra Killed In Canned Hunt
Zebra Killed In Canned Hunt

Heard the old expression. “Like shooting fish in a barrel?”

Maybe you have. Maybe you haven’t. But it describes a form of canned hunting — killing animals that have no possibility or hope of escape. Animals awaiting their deaths at the hands of high-paying savages who pay big money to kill an animal that has more value to the world than they do.

Try as I might, there is simply no understanding people who are able to murder in cold-blood an animal that is captive whether that is behind the bars of a cage, fenced-in on a Texas ranch or game farm in Africa, or drugged and unable to escape the monster with the lethal weapon in their hands.

Trapped Behind A Fence Awaiting the Canned Hunter
Trapped Behind A Fence Awaiting the Canned Hunter

“This, for many people, is what’s most offensive about hunting—to some, disgusting: that it encourages, or allows, us not only to kill but to take a certain pleasure in killing”
Michael Pollan

This “hunting,” really it is just cold-blooded murder by a different name, is not solely the province of the socially deviant, the mentally disturbed or the sociopath. Ordinary Americans, some admired by millions, are able to profit from canned hunts without a thought.

American actor Matthew McConaughey was exposed in recent years for using his Texas ranch to profit from the death of penned-up deer. For myself, since McConaughey is a prominent paid endorser of Lincoln cars, I cannot imagine buying any Ford product.

Fenced In Deer - Slated To Be Victims Of Canned Hunters
Fenced In Deer – Slated To Be Victims Of Canned Hunters

I will not support shooting fish in a barrel.

Singer Troy Lee Gentry paid to shoot a tame bear that was imprisoned in a small area unable to experience freedom because of the electrified fence that kept him a prisoner until his death. Gentry then falsified records and lied to friends about the “hunt.”

Owner Lee Marvin Greenly sold the bear for $4,650 and orchestrated the hunt, which Gentry videotaped and edited to make it appear the bear had been killed in a fair chase hunt, according to authorities.

Montgomery Gentry, which includes co-singer Eddie Montgomery, are known for hits such as “My Town” and “If You Ever Stop Loving Me.”

Do you really want to support the murder of captive animals by purchasing the music of Montgomery Gentry? I don’t. I won’t.

Animals of all sorts are kept on fenced-in, escape-proof, ranches especially in Texas. If you have the money, greedy evil canned hunting operators will provide you the animal of your choosing.

Graduation present? Reward for a good report card? Using the death of another living being as a way of feeling powerful when you know how powerless you really are? No problem. If you pay enough.

Too fat to walk to the enclosure, fence, or pen? Too fat to get in the vehicle that will drive you to your vehicle. Canned hunt operators now make it possible to shoot and kill a beautiful animal from the comfort of your computer keyboard — and then you can waddle or be transported to the corpse.

As wealthy bored heartless Americans flock to Africa to kill, the problem becomes one of species on the verge of extinction. Not enough targets.

But that wonderful American virtue, greed, is the mother of invention. Sensing money to be made, degenerates, especially in South Africa are breeding animals like lions solely and specifically to be killed in canned hunts.

“I ask people why they have deer heads on their walls. They always say because it’s such a beautiful animal. There you go. I think my mother is attractive, but I have photographs of her.”

Ellen DeGeneres

But greed, killing and savagery have opponents. A magnificent documentary exposing the horror of breeding lions for trophy hunters and the canned hunting industry is changing the tide.
“Blood Lions” is an eye-opening expose and a challenge to all of us who love and respect animals. It is surely one film that must be seen by every man, woman and child on our planet.

Joel Osteen: What You Need To Know

Joel Osteen: What You Need To Know

In the beginning there was (just for our purposes here) John Hillery Osteen.

John Osteen
John Osteen

Born in Paris Texas – home of a 65 foot replica Eiffel Tower topped with a cowboy hat. His date of birth was August 21, 1921. The story is that he was ordained before his 18th birthday as a Southern Baptist preacher.

He served as preacher at several congregations from Texas to California, accompanied by his wife, Emma Jean Shaffer.

(Don’t worry, Dodie, wife number two, comes later.)

In a few years John and Emma Jean divorced.

Love struck again, and John Osteen married Dolores “Dodie” Pilgrim on September 17, 1954.

John and Dodie Osteen

On Mother’s Day May 10, 1959, John and Dodie opened their Lakewood Baptist Church is a “dusty, abandoned feed store.  (Not long after they dropped the Baptist and became non-denominational.

John and Dodie’s efforts at Lakewood were blessed with phenomenal. Lakewood Church grew to a congregation of well over 10,000 souls housed in a new building.

Meanwhile, the family of John and Dodie Osteen grew to include:

Paul, Lisa, April, Tamara, and Joel Osteen.

Joel began his college studies at Oral Roberts University but soon dropped out.

He then returned to Lakewood Church where he worked behind the scenes for seventeen years. Joel initiated the Lakewood Church television department and faithfully recorded his father’s services for a growing audience.

John Osteen, who dies in 1999, and his son Joel, who succeeded him come from the Word Of Faith or Prosperity Gospel tradition. Neither is without critics.

“They both teach a twisted form of Christianity that teaches obedience, giving, and faith as a way to get things from God. They are both products of what is known as the Prosperity Gospel and The Word of Faith Movement, or the Seed Faith Movement.”

— Rick Henderson

Joel reluctantly stepped into the role of Lakewood Church pastor. His stated preference was for the behind-the-scenes media work.

Reluctant or not, pastor televangelist is the role Joel Osteen was born to fill. Since becoming the head of Houston’s Lakewood Church, Osteen has grown the church’s membership to more than 40,000. Since becoming the head of Houston’s Lakewood Church, Osteen has grown the church’s membership to more than 40,000. The already very large Lakewood Church has grown to over 40,000 members.

And a new church building,  an NBA former basketball arena. Once home to the Houston Rockets it is now home to Joel Osteen and Lakewood Church.

The growth of the church led to the growth of Joel Osteen’s wealth — in the $50 million-plus range. But Joel is not ashamed of his wealth.

God Wants People To Be Rich

In Joel Osteen’s case this includes a $10. 5 million mansion, as well as a secondary $3 million dollar home.

Joel is married to the former Victoria Iloff who hales from Huntsville, Alabama. And yes, her father worked in the aerospace program there. When Victoria was two years old her father took a job with NASA and the family moved to Houston.

Victoria briefly attended the University of Houston but dropped out of college to work in her mother’s jewelry business. It was at the jewelry store that she met a customer who stopped in for a watch battery — Joel Osteen.

The couple married April 4, 1957. They have two children: Johnathan and Alexandra.

Joel’s preaching has made him beloved by millions. Still, critics criticize what they term Christianity Lite.

“I think it’s a cotton candy gospel,” the Rev. Michael Horton, professor of theology at Westminster Seminary in Escondido, California said.

“His core message is God is nice, you’re nice, be nice. It’s sort of a, if it were a form of music, I think it would be easy listening.

He uses the Bible like a fortune cookie. ‘This is what’s gonna happen for you. There’s gonna be a windfall in your life tomorrow.’ The Bible’s not meant to be read that way.”

Morgan Freeman, currently fascinating viewer with his “The Story Of God” is not a religious man. But of all the religious people with whom Freeman interacted in the making of the series, it was Joel Osteen who made the biggest impression on him.

“In a Houston megachurch (Lakewood Church) I connected somewhat. Encouraged to think positive. You don’t just get some things just like that! You have to go do it to get it. God’s plan for us is to succeed. – Morgan Freeman

What Is Cinco De Mayo?

What is Cinco De Mayo?

Cinco De Mayo is the celebration of a great military victory in the history of Mexico.

cinco de mayo 7

President Benito Juarez, at a time of financial hardship in Mexico, and deeply in debt to various European countries, declared a moratorium on the re-payment of those debts.

The governments of France, Spain and Great Britain dispatched the military to collect on the debts. The customs house in the city of Veracruz was seized by these foreign armies.

Spain and Great Britain soon decided to leave Mexico. French leader Napoleon III decided to take control of Mexico.

A numerically and vastly larger French army engaged the Mexican army in battle. On May 5, 1862, the smaller, less-experienced and under-equipped Mexican army defeated the French army at the Battle of Puebla.

The victory was short-lived. A year later Napoleon III sent a French army of 30,000 to install the younger brother of the emperor of Austria, Archduke Maximilian, as emperor of Mexico.

Emperor Maximilian reigned for only a few years. He was executed and Benito Juarez again became president of Mexico.  Maximilian was executed in Mexico on June 19, 1867.

President Benito Juarez quote
President Benito Juarez quote

Cinco De Mayo is a shining moment in the history of Mexico. Though the victory was short-lived, it’s significance is still relevant today. The Battle of Puebla was a moment when the Mexican people asserted themselves forcefully in the face of yet another foreign invasion.

Let us direct all our efforts now to obtain and to consolidate the benefits of La Paz (Peace). Under its auspices, the protection of the laws and the authorities for the rights of all the inhabitants of the Republic will be effective. That the town and the government respect the rights of all. Between the individuals, like between the nations, the respect to the other people’s right is La Paz. — Benito Juarez

Cinco De Mayo celebrates the Battle of Puebla.

It also celebrates the beautiful people and culture of a free Mexico.

Ban All Hunting

Ban all hunting.

No exceptions.

Everywhere.

Ugly Hunter/Beautiful Lion
Ugly Hunter/Beautiful Lion

There is simply no justification, no reason, no purpose to the hunting of animals. Hunting is the moral equivalent of murder. Either all lives matter or no lives matter.

“Bragging rights” are not a sufficient motive for the taking of life.

“I ask people why they have deer heads on their walls. They always say because it’s such a beautiful animal. There you go. I think my mother is attractive, but I have photographs of her.”
Ellen DeGeneres

Ban All Hunting

Ellen DeGeneres is correct.

In today’s world, with smartphones and cameras with high pixel count, the only trophy anyone needs is a picture.

Taking a picture preserves the moment a beautiful animal is seen. Unlike hunting which ends the life of a beautiful animal. Needlessly. Such as this deer hunter.

deer killerThe deer is beautiful. The deer is an gentle herbivore. The deer deserves life.

The hunter has many options for food. Killing a deer should not be one of them.

“Sure, some find gunning down unsuspecting, innocent animals to be a real hoot. I mean, for Christ sake, they mantle the decapitated, formaldehyde-stuffed heads on the wall. Then, of course, there are the people who enjoy putting sunglasses or hats on it, even putting a blowout in its mouth as if it were an avid party animal. If it had any hands, there would surely be a plastic cup full of cheap beer in it, as well. We can’t forget that it would be named some horrendous name, such as Bill or Frank, something so plain, ordinary, and down-right ridiculous that makes me want to bitch-slap the perpetrators. ”
Chase Brooks

The deer is not the only wild animal that needs to fear the hunter.

Sadly, the wolf, ancestor of our beloved pet dogs, is a target as well.

The murder of a wolf is an awful thing done purely for sadistic “sport.”

Dead Wolf/Killer
Dead Wolf/Killer

Ban All Hunting

The wolf is a vital part of the eco-system in which it lives.

For too long humanity has waged irrational war on the wolf — driving it to the point of extinction.

“We have doomed the wolf not for what it is, but for what we deliberately and mistakenly perceive it to be –the mythologized epitome of a savage ruthless killer – which is, in reality, no more than a reflected image of ourself.”
Farley Mowat, Never Cry Wolf

Ban All Hunting

American society is too violent.

Hunting only feeds that violence.

A nation which worships death is depraved.

Sharks, Shark Fin Soup, China

The tragedy is global and enormous: Sharks, Shark Fin Soup, China. At first glance it may not seems so large a tragedy but please, read the numbers.

At the least, 100,000,000 sharks are killed each year by fisherman.

And many scientists and oceanographers say that number is conservative. The actual number may be closer to 300,000,000. Easily, heartlessly, people are killing at least 11,000 sharks per hour.

Sharks are now endangered with extinction.

Sharks, Shark Fin Soup, China

To feed China’s appetite for shark fin soup.

shark fin

The fin of the shark is the valuable part. After slicing the fins off a living shark it is thrown into the ocean unable to swim, sinking to death at the bottom of the ocean.

The fisherman easily earn $500 a pound for fins in this grisly, cruel, unsustainable practice. Depending on the species of shark that price can skyrocket into the tens of thousands of dollars.

Turns out the shark is not the most feared predator. The dishonor goes to the fisherman.

The fisherman, of course, would have no market for their despicable “catch” were it not for consumer demand in China.

Sharks, Shark Fin Soup, China

At one time shark fin soup was reserved for the Chinese emperor. Now, any consumer in China with the financial means can have this as often as they wish.

At least 100,000,000 sharks die each year for this.
At least 100,000,000 sharks die each year for this.

Can you and I do anything to save sharks while there are still shark to be saved.

Yes.

Contact your member of Congress. Laws should be passed which offer protection to sharks. As a voter, you have the right to have your voice heard in Congress. Do not just get angry, get involved.

Support organizations that advocate for shark conservation.

Use social media to alert other to this danger to the world’s sharks. Your participation on social media advocating for sharks and educating for sharks can have truly global reach.

Your voice, and the voices of those in your social media world, can easily travel to China. You can make an impact from the comfort of your own home.

Learn about sharks. There are many species of sharks swimming the world’s oceans. Not just the familiar great white shark demonized in the movie Jaws.

Shark finning is a tragedy of epic proportions. Human greed and human cruelty will continue until those of us who care join the fight to save the shark.

More Than 140 Characters

Twitter is a terrific way to communicate quickly to as many people as care read the tweet. But oh, that 140 character limit is tough. Yes, it sharpens the mind and the editorial skills. But some things deserve more than 140 characters. And so, Perspectives in born.

I made the leap to a blog.

I found a web hosting service I liked — BlueHost.
Next came the WordPress.
Between the two of them a blog is becoming a reality.

There is so much helpful information on the Internet, on BlueHost and WordPress. For that I am grateful. But there is so much to learn. My hope is to not make too many mistakes, missteps, or make myself look like a fool — especially in the beginning.

The driving force that finally made me do this is my strong, deep and enduring passion for animals. I am opposed to animal cruelty in any form, and that includes hunting, and believe deeply that each animal life is precious and as worthy of respect as human life.

I tweet a lot about animals. That includes those who abuse, main, kill them as well as those, like me, who love them, respect them and want to be a “voice for the voiceless.”

At the same time, there is so much that catches my attention. This is an election year in America. Violence is spiraling out of control in our cities. Nations still find war far easier than diplomacy. Etc. Etc. Etc.

A blog presents the opportunity to break free — at least occasionally — from the rigid but necessary, I guess, confines of Twitter’s 140 characters. For Twitter I am grateful. And I will continue to be a loyal user. It’s just nice to know that I can say more, express more, write more when I want.

I’ll post this. Critique it for myself. Fine tune my plugins, themes, appearance of the blog. And then get to work. Like all the people who call this planet home I have a unique perspective. I am going to take a second look at this world and share my perspective.

What a great time to be alive.
